How to write the perfect piano chord
A new technique that helps piano players to play a better-sounding piano has been developed by researchers from the University of Cambridge.
The technique, known as chromatic resonance, is based on the principle that the vibrations of a musical instrument can be transmitted through the strings of the instrument.
It works by mimicking the sound of a resonant string, but instead of sending the vibration directly into the strings, the vibrations are transmitted through vibrations in the medium around the instrument that are called the strings.
“The vibrations that are transferred by the strings can then be used to modulate the notes on the keyboard, producing a more musical and harmonically appropriate sound,” said Professor Nick Biddle, who led the research.
Professor Biddle was also one of the original inventors of the technique, and he described the research as “truly exciting”.
“There are many other ways that the human voice can be used in musical performance, but the concept that you can modulate sounds to produce a different musical sound is a great one,” he said.
“This has been around for centuries, and it’s fascinating that it’s finally been shown to work in a real instrument.”
It’s the first time that it has been demonstrated to work with a musical note and that the vibration of the strings makes a difference.”
The researchers were able to demonstrate the technique by recording the strings in an instrument, and using a computer program to generate sounds.
While the technique works well with the notes that piano players already know, the researchers also found it was possible to play some notes that had previously been difficult to play.
They were able, for example, to play the A major pentatonic scale on the piano.
In addition, the computer program generated sounds for the note “c” on the standard A major scale, the first to be used as a keyboard key.”
We can play these notes with a piano that was designed to play these scales, so that’s something that’s not possible with a traditional piano,” said Dr Mark Wilson, from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
While this new technique may be able to make the piano easier to play, it also may have some potential for making it sound more beautiful.
Dr Wilson said the technique was still a long way from being able to reproduce the full sounds of a real piano, but he hopes that it will help to change that.”
If you have a piece of music that you’ve got great sounds that you want to make it sound like, you can use the vibrations to make that sound more musical,” he explained.
